Am I overthinking VWCE vs VT as a Swiss who might leave soon?

Are you sure? I think they have abandonned the idea.

Netherlands is just a case in point. Insane tax not fully ratified yet. In general, governments can tax you as they wish and there might be more and more reasons to do so in Europe, given their need to spend money on unproductive things like defense, social and regulations.

Netherland to me is an example to focus on current situations and legislation, not overthink VWCE vs VT, and only act once changes have a high possibility to becoming a reality.
Imagine Dutch people taking actions on each popular vote in Switzerland before it has been voted on.
Of course, this is a personal preference.

But I think the Dutch proposed tax is applied on YoY gains and not long term gains. So this wouldn’t matter if someone who has accumulated long term gains move there

What we have in NL with the unrealized capgain tax saga is insanity. No one knows what it will be. But I try to stop worrying about that as it is outside of my control.

VT vs. VWRL/VWCE. VT is a better vehicle, total market, cheaper, and more efficient. You can claim back a part of withholding taxes. But everything falls into the US ETF wrapper, even non-US holdings. Also, it comes with a nasty IRS release process that your heirs must follow if you die holding it. So I sold VT and moved to VWCE.

It seems that a true UCITS VT is in the making https://www.etfstream.com/articles/vanguard-plots-size-factor-etf-rollout-in-upcoming-launch-spree

That will be a true UCITS VT.

Both is fine, so you are overthinking. Important is to start and to stay the course.

Before you move, yes.

Thanks, everyone, for your advice. I think I’ll start with VWCE and see how things go from there. I tried to make my first purchase, but I got this message: “Not allowed to open a position: no trading permission. You may need to add the appropriate trading permission through Client Portal.”

What’s strange is that I’m able to buy VT without any issue, so I don’t get the same message there. I do have permission to trade stocks, though. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing this?

You should enable trading permissions for specific exchanges, i.e. Switzerland (EBS), Xetra etc. Just look at it, it is pretty self-explanatory.

Yes, indeed, I hadn’t properly enabled the permissions for European stock! All good.
